Proper use of coolant.

Due to the nature of the grinding / abrasive cutting process a high amount of heat is generated.

It is widely known that when grinding with Diamond and CBN wheels one of the most important factors to consider is cooling. By properly applying coolant it will maintain the performance of the abrasive wheels, leading to more efficient processes and less down time for your machines.

It is the case that whilst coolant is widely used it can be misapplied, leading to a reduced performance and life of the abrasive wheels. This may be caused by the misconception that the coolant is used for the specific work piece at a point in time; for instance a saw blade tooth.

The machining of an individual tooth can take seconds, where the tooth is then left to cool as the others in the blades are worked. This means that they can be left to cool relatively easily. The abrasive grinding wheel is in consistent contact as each tooth is machined - which is where the majority of the heat is then generated and stored. The use of coolant should be for the benefit of the grinding wheel, not of the piece being ground. The coolant used for a superabrasive wheel should be a coolant, not a cutting fluid. Superabrasive wheels can work dry, the use of a cutting oil can often clog the wheels, reducing the effectiveness of the abrasive.

The coolant should be directed at the point just before the abrasive meets the work piece. It should be angled slightly downwards and should flow at a rate just above the speed of the wheel.

This means that the direction of the wheel acts to transport the coolant into the stock removal zone, thereby ensuring that the abrasive wheel is cooled and stock can be washed away by the centrifugal force of the rotation of the wheel through the work piece.

Where coolant is incorrectly applied or the wrong fluid is used as a coolant it will not sufficiently cool the wheels or remove stock, resulting in decreased performance, and increase the risk of wheel malfunction through cracking etc.
